What is sandwich panel?

A sandwich panel is a composite panel that uses a hard and strong skin (panel) bonded to a lightweight core. Common skin materials are carbon fiber and fiberglass. Common core materials are foam and aluminum or aramid honeycomb. Sandwich panels are very light and strong.

What are sandwich panels used for?

Sandwich panels are used when ultra-lightweight components are required. Aircraft interiors (walls, floors, etc.) are often constructed of sandwich panels rather than solid materials. Satellites, trains and race cars also use sandwich panels to keep weight as low as possible while remaining strong.

What is the difference between sandwich panels and carbon fiber panels?

Sandwich panels provide the stiffness and strength of thicker panels without the extra weight. Since most of the heavy work on the board is done by the outermost skin, replacing the middle section with a lightweight core has minimal impact on performance. Cores are typically more than 95% lighter than carbon fiber.

Can you mount something to a sandwich panel?

Because the skins on sandwich panels are so thin, extra precautions must be taken when installing items onto them. In many cases, it is feasible to glue fasteners to the surface. For penetration bolts, inserts must be used or a section of the core filled with adhesive to prevent the panel from being crushed when the bolts are tightened.
